This book, "00," is a monograph of Brussels-based artist Richard Venlet, published on the occasion of the exhibition "Richard Venlet – Paramount Basics" held at the Antwerp Museum of Contemporary Art "M HKA" in 2002.
Venlet's works are often installations that create spaces that are conscious of the context of space and museums, and the relationship between them and the viewer. Using a minimal method of expression, he skillfully incorporates the unique rhythm and atmosphere of each space and building, intervening in the architectural context of the exhibition space (sometimes so subtly that the viewer doesn't notice) and making extremely minor changes.
In one installation, a part of the white wall of the exhibition space is painted with glossy white paint in a very delicate manner, and the viewer only notices its presence when light shines on it...
For Venlet, exhibition means both the act of seeing and being seen. Therefore, the viewer plays an important role in his work and is encouraged to participate. Sometimes literally, like a "ping-pong table" or a "chalk room" where messages can be left.
