Pair of Peruvian Chulucana Pottery Figures

Two vintage Chulucanas figures, have happy rounded shapes and subtle coloration. One is by Gerasimo Sosa. Not familiar with the other artist. Both signed on the bottom. About 4” tall, 3.25” W. No condition issues.

Made in the north of Peru, the artists’ technique was maintained from their ancestors of prehispanic Vicus culture. After the first firing process the artisan uses a positive-negative technique. All the spots that should be paled are covered with clay before being fired. Using mango leaves smokes the parts that are not covered into the signature blackened color. Then, the clay is removed and the design appears. The artisan then burnishes the piece by rubbing a river stone over the surface to achieve the characteristic glossy finish.
