The buckles and zippers are well made and can stand a beating. Side packs have lots of room and interior of harness is padded for comfort. A 50lb takes a medium, just to give you an idea on sizing
It is made of three parts: two side saddles and one part that lays on the back (top). The saddles can be adjusted to account for the girth of your dog, either higher up or lower down. This helps when still growing . I imagine that most average sized dogs who will be using this on the trail will use a medium or lower.
