Dereck Whittenburg’s journey of wanting to become a basketball player begins while watching a nationally televised game where he sees his cousin and future NBA Hall of Famer, David Thompson, winning the 1974 National Championship at NC State. From that moment, Whittenburg decided that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his cousin and dreamed of not just becoming a Wolfpack, but to also being a part of a National Championship team himself.

In his early years as a basketball player at William Wirt Junior High, Whittenburg got the attention of one of the scouts from DeMatha High School. While scoring 41 points during one of his games, the scout then went and expressed to the Legendary Iconic Coach, Morgan Wootten, that he needed to take a look at Whittenburg to try and recruit him. At the time, Whittenburg had no idea that he had done anything spectacular or that he had gotten any attention for the way he had played, however.....
