Man and Woman's eternal ery is for simplicity in a complex world, but life will always be complicated, even in a thousand years time. Man will ever reach for the rose, enamoured of its beauty, and miss the quiet loveliness of the spring or autuma crocus he is treading under foot.

This story is based on this truth, and tells of a soldier who did not want serious relationships in war-time, but tried instead to content himself with flirtation in the place of love, and what he called freedom instead of imagined bondage. We have the Tempest family and the love affairs of Roddy and his two sisters, Mrs. Paget at Shrubberies and her daughter, Thalia, and their stories, and the advent of American troops in an English village. The whole comprises an ordinary tale about ordinary people, with the moral that the crocus is just as lovely as the rose.

No dust jacket. Wear on cover. Pencil writing inside cover. Please see photos.
