Origins & Design Burleigh Pottery (officially Burgess & Leigh Ltd.) was founded in 1851 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England — the heart of Britain’s pottery industry. The Calico pattern was introduced in the 1960s, inspired by 19th-century indigo fabrics (known as “calico” prints). It quickly became Burleigh’s most iconic and best-selling pattern, and it’s still in production today at the historic Middleport Pottery (saved by The Prince’s Trust in 2011). Design: Pattern: Dense floral motif — white flowers and leaves on a deep cobalt blue background. Technique: Created using tissue transfer printing (Burleigh is the last pottery in the world still using this traditional method). Style: Rustic, timeless, and instantly recognizable — works equally well in modern and country kitchens. Material: Earthenware pottery (ceramic) Made from a blend of clay, flint, and Cornish stone (china stone). Fired at around 1,100°C (2,012°F), which makes it durable but lighter than stoneware.
