At the time a 21 year old Ed Eisenberg hand-colored multiple silver proof prints to test color combinations for the cover.
Although his initial version featured a red car to match Superman's cape, Eisenberg recalled that the color was changed for the final, published version to ensure the car did not distract from Superman.
Decades later, while working at DC Comics, Eisenberg found his original, framed, hand-colored proof in a trash bin near the office of publisher Harry Donenfeld after Donenfeld's retirement and took it home.
